My little stroll which turned into a 10km hike
Today was Children's Day, a day off from their various activities for all Korean children. No students makes it an automatic day off for us teachers as well. A long time ago Devon and I decided that we would hike to the top of this hill by our house. Today seemed like the perfect day to conquer it. I call it a hill, but today I realized that it is in fact a small mountain. We didn't know how to get to it short of bush-whacking so our friend Jessica came along. She's lived in the neighbourhood her whole life so we figured she could help us out.
Well, Jessica didn't know how to get there, we headed up what we thought was the trail and came across a house in the woods. Dogs were barking and people were staring at the strange white people, so we headed back. We were almost out of the woods when we came across two boys, around the age of 10. Jessica asked them if they knew how to get to the top, they did. We figured they'd just point us in the right direction, but these fabulous little boys actually walked us all the way to the top. Granted, they took us up the roughest route possible, but it was still amazing that they'd go so out of their way to help us. There is one well worn path up the mountain, we didn't know where it was, but it's on the opposite side from where we live. Once we got to the top, we sat down, cooled down and chatted while the boys played. When we were ready to head back down the three of us started off down the well-worn path, figuring that was safer. We waved good-bye to our "guides," but they waved us in the other direction. We were apparently to follow them again. So, off we went down the mountain, definetly not on the well-worn path again. I must say though, their way was way faster. Much shorter, albeit quite tougher.
We got to the bottom unscathed and bought our little guides some drinks for the kindness before saying good-bye. In the pictures it looks like a pretty blah day, and it was, but still muggy. On top of the mountain there was a good wind to cool you down, but as soon as you got back down it was stiffling.
Anyways, we headed off and decided that we should walk to this lake that Jessica knows about. The lake was actually a pond, and a very far away pond. In total we figure we ended up walking around 10 km. All-in-all not the worst way to spend a day off. The walking was good for us and we defiently got a cardio work-out trying to keep up with the boys as they raced up and down the mountain in true 10-year-old style. I also saw the biggest frog I've ever seen in my life! I've only ever seen little tree frogs, these ones were easily the size of cantelope, at least. And loud! I thought it was a goose, nope, just a frog! Ahh, excitment.....
Anyways, that's not really THAT exciting, but it's all I have to report for right now. My friend Jenn is coming up to visit me this weekend from Masan, she'll arrive early on Saturday and leave Sunday night. I'll be more exciting then, I promise!
Cheers!
